1962 Club, hosted by Simon of Stuck in a Book and Karen of Kaggsy’s Bookish Ramblings, starts on Monday and we will all be reading and writing about books published in that year. It seems to have been another great year for publishing – I have previously read and reviewed six 1962 books on my blog and thought I would list them here before the week begins. If you’re looking for some last-minute ideas I can recommend all of these!
The Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side by Agatha Christie – There always seems to be at least one Christie option for every club year! In this one, Miss Marple investigates a poisoning during a party hosted by a famous actress.
The Bull from the Sea by Mary Renault – The sequel to The King Must Die, but would probably work as a standalone. The two books retell the Greek myth of Theseus.
Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury – A wonderfully eerie and atmospheric story in which a very unusual carnival arrives in Green Town, Illinois.
Devil Water by Anya Seton – A fascinating historical novel set in Northumberland and Virginia during the time of the Jacobite Rebellions of 1715 and 1745.
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson – A strange, unsettling novel about two sisters living in an isolated house with a tragic past.
The Moonspinners by Mary Stewart – One of my favourite Mary Stewart suspense novels, with a beautiful Greek island setting!

Hospital Station….
Interesting year, 1962…
Yes, lots of interesting books published in 1962 – and I haven’t read a single one that you’ve listed there!
‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ is very good and ‘Silent Spring’ is worth reading as a classic of Environmentalism.
The only one of these I’ve read is We Have Always Lived in The Castle – a superb piece of fiction.
Yes, it’s a great book – so atmospheric and unusual. I was tempted to re-read it but decided on different books instead.
Some nice choices – I confess that the Christie is beckoning strongly!!! Such a good year.
I read the Christie fairly recently so decided not to re-read it, but it was a good one!
Nice ones! I’ve just added one to my list thanks to another blog, so I should get three done …
I think I should manage at least two, but maybe three. There turned out to be a lot more choice for 1962 than I thought at first!
I really like Something Wicked This Way Comes as well as The Moon Spinners. The only other book published in 1962 that I know I’ve read is A Wrinkle In Time. Happy reading for this challenge. 😀
I’ve read A Wrinkle in Time too, but a long time ago! And thanks – I’m sure it will be a great week.
I have read Something Wicked This Way Comes, The Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side, and The Bull From the Sea. I have always loved Mary Renault—I’m the Greek Geek that loves all things ancient Greece: literature, drama, history and philosophy! Renault writes so movingly and with such scholarship about that time in history.
I’ve still only read the two Theseus books by Mary Renault, but I’m looking forward to reading her others. I’m hoping to start Fire from Heaven soon.
Good list–I’m reading through Dear Agatha’s books. I haven’t read the others.
I’m hoping one day I’ll have read all of Agatha’s books, but it won’t happen soon. She wrote so many!
I read a couple each year & usually a Dick Francis. Too
I’m not sure I’ve ever read Devil Water. I love Katherine, of course, but so some of her books are really depressing!
I might review The Moonspinners if I have time this weekend.
Katherine is one of my favourite books, but I’ve had mixed feelings about the others I’ve read by Anya Seton. Devil Water interested me mainly because it’s set in my part of England – it’s a good book, but not a great one.
