Here we are at the end of another month! I didn’t read as many books as I have in previous months, but where books are concerned, quality is more important than quantity and I loved almost everything I read in May.
Favourite books read in May
Choosing my favourites was difficult this month because, as I said, I enjoyed all nine books that I read. However, there are two that stand out from the rest: the first was Gillespie and I by Jane Harris (I posted my review yesterday) and the other was The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, which I hope to be posting about soon.
Other books read in May
Touch by Alexi Zentner
The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Charles Dickens
Ghost Light by Joseph O’Connor
Death in the Clouds by Agatha Christie
The Report by Jessica Francis Kane
A Word Child by Iris Murdoch
Orlando by Virginia Woolf
I’ve also been reading Dr Thorne by Anthony Trollope, a few chapters per week, and although I’m only halfway through I’m enjoying it as much as the other Trollope books I’ve read.
How was your month? Did you read any good books in May?
My month turned out better in the end and I look forward to reading some of the books that you have reviewed as well.
I’m glad your month turned out okay, Jo!
Cool! I’m reading The Master and Margarita right now. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
I really loved The Master and Margarita. I’ll be posting my thoughts soon, but I’m very behind with reviews at the moment!
Now that looks like a wonderful month of books. Gillespie and I is next on my list, and I have read so much praise. So far my favourite book of the month either The Sonambulist or When God Was a Rabbit, and I should finish Miss Ranskill Comes Home tonight, which I am finding strangely wonderful.
I hope you enjoy Gillespie and I as much as I did. I have copies of both The Somnambulist and When God Was a Rabbit which I’m hoping to get to this month. And yes, Miss Ranskill Comes Home is a wonderful book – one of my favourite Persephones so far.
My May was weird. I read genre fiction (horror, thriller) that I normally wouldn’t read, but I did it for a challenge at work. They were enjoyable, but not my usual. The Master and Margarita has always scared me for some reason – I look forward to your thoughts!
I read loads last month and enjoyed most of them. Finally caught up with ‘Little Boy Lost’ and echo everything that has been said about it. The ending will stay with me forever. Really enjoyed ‘The Return of Catpain John Emmett’ by Elizabeth Speller (have her new one, ‘The Strange Case of Kitty Easton’, on my TBR pile). ‘Savage Lands’ by Clare Clark had lots of historical detail of the early french settlers in America and similarly’ Purge’ by Sofi Oksanen gave some understanding of Estonia’s 20c. history – a somewhat uncomfortable read but well worth it. Read and watched the dvd of ‘The House of Mirth’ – Edith Wharton, having enjoyed The Age of Innocence. I think I prefered The House of Mirth. Loved Vita Sackville West’s All Passion Spent (had me laughing out loud in places) and will look out for more from her. Alan Bennett’s ‘Smut’ lived up to its title. For next month have ‘When God was a Rabbit’ and Linda Grants ‘We had it so Good’ . Sorry to go on but it was such a good month!!! Love your reviews – thank you.
I loved The Return of Captain John Emmett and can’t wait to read Elizabeth Speller’s new book. I also enjoyed We Had It So Good, after a slow start. Happy reading!
Anbolyn – it used to scare me too, so I’m glad I finally decided to read it and discovered that there was really nothing to be scared of! It was much easier to read than I expected.
I’m looking forward to your review of the Trollope, seeing it on your blog has gone me interested in it. My May wasn’t too bad, though I’m hoping for better in June.
I’m loving Trollope more and more with every book of his I read. He was a new discovery for me last year and is quickly becoming one of my favourite Victorians.
