It’s that time of year again when plans are being made for 2013 and next year’s reading challenges are being announced! I prefer not to sign up for too many challenges as in the past I’ve been so bad at actually completing them, but there are one or two I can never resist – and the Historical Fiction Reading Challenge is one of them.
The Historical Fiction Challenge is again being hosted by the wonderful Historical Tapestry and runs from 1 January to 31 December 2013. There are five different levels of participation to choose from:
20th century reader – 2 books
Victorian reader – 5 books
Renaissance Reader – 10 books
Medieval – 15 books
Ancient History – 25+ books
This is one challenge I never have any trouble completing, so I will be signing up at the Ancient History level, which means reading at least 25 historical fiction books next year. As historical fiction is my favourite genre and forms such a large percentage of my reading every year anyway, it’s not too ‘challenging’ for me, but I still love taking part as I enjoy discovering new historical fiction blogs and seeing what everyone else has been reading each month.
If you’re interested in joining too, see this post at Historical Tapestry.
All I know is I need to read more historical fiction. I have plenty on my shelves to read too! Plus lots of recommends from you too!
Good luck with reading more historical fiction and getting to all those books on your shelves!
I was so excited to see this, Helen. I’ve never done a reading challenge, but this looks like the perfect one to kick off with. Still debating which level to go for – I think I’ll end up choosing Renaissance Reader because it gives me flexibility to read some other genres too (I don’t get through as many books as you in a year!) – plus, I like the name…
And I couldn’t believe that they’ve chosen to make a button out of the portrait of John Saltonstall which I was enthusing about back in October at Frieze Masters! (http://theidlewoman.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/view-from-garret.html) I didn’t even know this portrait existed before I saw it there and yet it’s obviously famous enough to have a button made of it! In fact, I may have joined because of the button alone 🙂
The button is gorgeous, isn’t it? Thanks for the information – I could tell it was obviously a portrait of somebody from either the Elizabethan or Jacobean era, but I didn’t know his name. Good luck with the challenge!
I’m not doing any challenges next year I don’t think but I like historical mysteries so will look out for your reviews.
I love historical mysteries so will probably be reading a few of those for the challenge.
I look forward to your reviews, but no challenges for me next year going to keep things simple.
This is the only one I have signed up for so far. I’m trying to resist the temptation to join any more.
I haven’t signed up for a challenge in a long time. Since I love historical fiction, and am actually reading one right now, “Shadow of the Sun” by Merrie P. Wycoff, a great historical fiction that I am finding impossible to put down. I find a lot of historical fictions like this. Count me in!
