I read nine books in February which is less than I normally read, but it’s been such a busy month for me I’m quite happy with the number of books I’ve read!
My favourite book read in February was The Game of Kings. I’m so glad I’ve finally discovered Dorothy Dunnett!
Mariana by Susanna Kearsley was another great book I read last month – I loved the setting, the characters and the atmosphere. I also enjoyed The Virgin Queen’s Daughter, a very entertaining historical fiction novel by Ella March Chase.
Also in February, I read both of S.J. Bolton’s two Lacey Flint crime novels, Now You See Me and Dead Scared. I enjoyed them both but I thought the first one was slightly better.
I read Macbeth as part of my plan to read one of Shakespeare’s plays every month of 2012. It’s not the first time I’ve read it, but I think I appreciated it more this time round and will be posting my thoughts on it soon. And I also read Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. It took me nearly the whole month to read it, but it was worth the time and effort!
Two more books I read in February were A Small Circus by Hans Fallada and The Land of Decoration by Grace McCleen, and I found them both disappointing in different ways. I thought A Small Circus was confusing and I didn’t like any of the characters, and although I could definitely see the appeal of The Land of Decoration, it just wasn’t for me.

So far, this has been my best reading year in ages; one highlight in February was Z.Z. Packer’s short story collection, Drinking Coffee Elsewhere, and I think it’ll be on my list of favourites for this year.
I’ve been wanting to read those Dunnett books for ages, so it’s nice to know that you enjoyed the first one so much. I have the McLeen novel on my stack, too — and expect to get to it soon — so I hope that I enjoy it more than you did, but course we can’t be the “right reader” for all books or those perfect matches we do find wouldn’t be so amazing after all!
I don’t read many short story collections, but that’s something I’d like to change. I’ll have to look out for Drinking Coffee Elsewhere, as you’ve recommended it so highly.
February has not been great reading wise for me, very mixed. Too many books on the go and concentration not very good for February.
I am hoping now that perhaps March will be a bit more settled. Lots of lovely books to read mind.
I had too many books on the go in February as well. I think reading no more than two at a time works best for me.
I think its funny how 9 books is not a great reading month for you, it would be a mega reading month for me hehe! I had about 7 books on the go this month and managed to finished four of them. Seemed to get a bit of crime theme to my reading going on as well 🙂
I’m happy to have read 9, really – it’s just less than I was reading in an average month last year. And I did enjoy all of them apart from the last two that I mentioned.
I’ve had a mixed months – some disappointments but some real stars too. I’m looking forward to the new S J Bolton, and you have enthused me about reading Dorothy Dunnett one day.

A Good Month! Started with your recommendations Gillespie and I and The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet – both brilliant! The treatment of the Japanese was also touched on in Moloka’i (Alan Brennert) about a lepar colony in Hawaii so was pleased to have read a little about their treatment before. I also discovered Sarah Rayne – Property of a Lady. Have you come across her books? Really enjoyed that so now reading another. Will have a look for DDL.
