Top Ten Tuesday: Things to do on a rainy day

This week’s topic for Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl) is: “April Showers (Interpret this however you’d like: rainy day reads, books that make you cry, books that give you happy tears, books to wash away a bad reading experience, books set in rainy places, books with rain/raindrops/umbrellas on the cover, blue book covers, etc.)”

There are so many ways to approach this week’s topic, but I’ve decided to make a list of things you could do on a rainy day and choose a book title to fit each one.

1. Go to a museum

Behind the Scenes at the Museum by Kate Atkinson

2. Play cards

Cards on the table by Agatha Christie

3. Have tea

Tea on Sunday by Lettice Cooper

4. Go to the library

The Astral Library by Kate Quinn

5. Play hide and seek

A Game of Hide and Seek by Elizabeth Taylor

6. Sit by the fire

Fireside Gothic by Andrew Taylor

7. Write in your diary

Diary of a Provincial Lady by EM Delafield

8. Decorate your house

The Land of Decoration by Grace McCleen

9. Tend your indoor plants

Keep the Aspidistra Flying by George Orwell

10. Wait for the sun

The Sunrise by Victoria Hislop

~

What do you like to do when it’s raining outside? Can you think of any other books I could add to this list?

Ah, this makes me think of the ancient children’s novel by Elizabeth Enright, The Saturdays, where they get cross at being bored on rainy Saturdays and have to think of better things to do!

Thank you. I enjoyed coming up with ten rainy day activities, but somehow forgot to include reading a book…although I did mention a trip to the library!

What a fun way to answer! I looked at my recent reads and found a few more: The Cloister Walk: Walk around a cloister or other covered walkway. The Correspondent: Write letters. Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: Have a heart to heart conversation. So many good ideas!

I love the approach that you’ve decide to take on this, especially as you’ve paired the options up with books. I havent heard of any of these but with the word ‘gothic’ in one title I’ll definitely be looking it up. I love jigsaw puzzles which fit rainy days so I’ll go with The Puzzle Wood.

I thought of including jigsaw puzzles, but couldn’t think of a book title to go with it. I forgot about The Puzzle Wood, which I read a few years ago – it would have been perfect for this list!

What a clever twist on the topic. I love it! I live in the Phoenix, Arizona, area where it is very desert-y and dry. We don’t get much rain, sadly, and when we do, it’s generally over very quickly. People here get very excited when it rains, me included 🙂 I like to step outside and enjoy its sight, sound, and smell 🙂

    Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

Thanks, Susan! We get lots of rain here in England and most people complain about it, but I can see how living in a dry climate would make you appreciate it more.

Please leave a comment. Thanks!
