The result of the latest Classics Club Spin has been revealed today.
The idea of the Spin was to list twenty books from my Classics Club list, number them 1 to 20, and the number announced by the Classics Club represents the book I have to read before 22nd August. The number that has been selected is…
6
And this means the book I need to read is…
I Will Repay by Baroness Orczy
It has been ten years since Juliette de Marny’s father asked her to swear revenge upon Deroulede for the death of her brother in a duel. At last she finds herself in Deroulede’s house with an opportunity to betray him. Juliette realizes, too late, that she is in love with Deroulede. Can the Scarlet Pimpernel help?
~
Not one that I was particularly hoping for from my list, but still not a bad result. After reading The Scarlet Pimpernel a few years ago and discovering that there was a whole series of Pimpernel books, I decided to continue working through them in chronological order. I have since read Sir Percy Leads the Band and The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel, so I Will Repay is next for me.
Have you read this book? Did you take part in the spin and are you happy with your result?
Not read any of this series though I remember my mother being a fan — or at least she had read some Scarlet Pimpernel titles. I got Charles Kingsley’s Hypatia which scores on two fronts–it’s a classic, and it’s an historical novel! At nearly 500 pages to read in just a month it’s scaring me a little…
Hypatia is not a book I’ve ever thought about reading, so I’ll be very interested to hear what you think of it.
I haven’t read your spin book. I got The Corn King and the Spring Queen by Naomi Mitchison, a hefty tome that I’ve been avoiding reading for ages, so I hope I manage to finish it this time.
The Corn King and the Spring Queen is a book I’ve been interested in reading for ages too, so I hope you enjoy it!
I think I’ve only read her Scarlet Pimpernel. That one sounds fun! I got The Woods in Winter by Stella Gibbons.
So far, the other Pimpernel books haven’t been as good as the first one, but they are still fun! I hope The Woods in Winter is good.
So do I!
Not even heard of it! I hope it’s a fun read.
The other three Scarlet Pimpernel books I’ve read were fun, so I hope this one will be too!
Not read any of the series sorry, no not even Scarlet Pimpernel. I’ve been curious about that one for some years but somehow it never made it to my classics club list. It must have been worth reading though if you were interested enough to read more by the same author
I loved The Scarlet Pimpernel but the others in the series that I’ve read so far haven’t been quite as good. This seems to be one of the more highly rated ones, so I’m looking forward to it.
I loved the Scarlet Pimpernel, but not sure I’d read a whole series. I got Making of a Marchioness–a happy result. I enjoyed listening to it for an hour or so last night and it is very good so far. It was on sale with a couple of other Persephone audios recently so I grabbed all 3 books.
I haven’t read The Making of a Marchioness yet but I’ve been meaning to read it for years, so I’m pleased you’re enjoying it so far!
It’s under $5 for the audio, too.
Sorry it wasn’t the one you were hoping for. I have Orczy’s Scarlet Pimpernel sitting on my shelf waiting for me to read it. Someday. 🙂 I hope this one turns out to be a really good read!
Thank you! The Scarlet Pimpernel is a great book, so I’m hoping this one will be too.
Besides Scarlett, I have not really liked the other books in the series. But this may be interesting; looking forward to your thoughts!
I’ve only tried two of the others so far and was a bit disappointed with them, so I’m hoping this next one will be better!
Sorry that you didn’t get one of the books you really, really wanted from the Spin, but glad this is short and not unwelcome result. I haven’t read any of the Scarlet Pimpernel books, but I would really like too!
The first Scarlet Pimpernel book is fun – I would definitely recommend it! The others in the series that I’ve read so far have been a bit disappointing in comparison, but I’m hoping this one will be better.
